A Legacy of Benevolent CareMissionMadonna Manor is a Catholic healthcare facility for senior adults devoted to providing a home within a spiritual atmosphere. Faithful to the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, the values of Reverence, Service and Stewardship guide staff and volunteers in providing services and activities which foster the dignity and individuality of each person. Values Faithful to the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio, Madonna Manor promotes these core values that are applicable to personal attitudes and actions, to relationships and co-workers, and to the service rendered to others: Reverence History Madonna Manor went from dream to reality in just over a year. In the fall of 1963 Sr. Benedict Bunning, OSB, then prioress of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery presented a plan to address three needs: first, to take care of Harry Baker, a retired monastery employee with no family who lived on the property; second, to help sisters care for their aging parents; and finally to find an alternate use for the Monastery farm which was losing money. Her goal, as she presented it to the Benedictine Community, was “inexpensive independent living for the elderly in the security of a ‘looked after’ environment.” On the site of the former Monastery farm, Madonna Manor opened its doors on December 1, 1964 with six residents in its first independent living cottage. Just two weeks later, ground was broken for the nursing home building that opened on December 1, 1965. Throughout the rest of the 1960s, and into the 1990s, the Manor continued to grow adding additional cottages and a Personal Care wing. Today, there are 47 independent living apartments, 25 personal care rooms and 35 nursing care beds. In 1998 the Manor became an associate member of the Benedictine Health System of Duluth, Minn., while still remaining under the sponsorship of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg Monastery. In 2006, the Benedictine Community agreed that the best way to preserve the mission of the Manor was to transfer sponsorship to a new health care system. The Benedictine Sisters chose to transfer sponsorship of the Manor to the Franciscan Sisters whose values of Reverence, Service and Stewardship are closely aligned with those of the Benedictines. On February 1, 2007, Madonna Manor became a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Oh. and a member of the Franciscan Services Corporation, the health care ministry of the Franciscan Sisters. The Franciscan Sisters have been serving in healthcare ministry for 90 years. And, through the Franciscan Services Corporation (FSC), currently oversee organizations in Ohio, Kentucky and Texas including six hospitals, eight long-term care facilities, four assisted living facilities, independent senior housing, a counseling center, and a domestic violence shelter. FSC also shares our commitment to serve the poor and understands that the Manor serves all individuals regardless of their income. Since its founding in 1964, Madonna Manor has remained committed to providing benevolent care for residents in personal or nursing care whose financial resources are depleted. No one has ever been asked to leave because of an inability to pay for the care they receive. The experience and expertise of the Franciscan Sisters and FSC not only enhances the values-centered service we provide, but ensures that Madonna Manor is well positioned to continue this legacy into the future. Vision Madonna Manor will be a leading faith-based facility for the continuing growth and care of aging adults. In response to individual, family and community needs we will offer a variety of quality services. We will provide a continuum of care in a compassionate, home-like setting that enriches staff and those we serve. |
